Rewiring a House Cost UK 2026

Full rewire costs by house size, including consumer unit, testing and certification.

A full house rewire is a major but sometimes essential job. If your home still has old rubber-insulated wiring, a fuse box instead of a modern consumer unit, or round-pin sockets, a rewire is not optional — it is a safety requirement. Most UK homes built before the 1960s that have not been rewired will need one.

What is included

A full rewire includes replacing all cables throughout the house, fitting a new consumer unit (fuse board) with RCDs, replacing all sockets and light switches, installing new light fittings if needed, testing and certification (an Electrical Installation Certificate). It does not typically include making good the walls afterwards — expect to need a plasterer and decorator once the electrician has finished.

How long does a rewire take

A 2-bed house takes 5 to 7 days. A 3-bed semi takes 7 to 10 days. A large 4-5 bed detached house takes 10 to 14 days. The house is usually liveable during the rewire but expect significant disruption — floorboards lifted, walls chased, and temporary power arrangements.

Consumer unit replacement only

If your wiring is in reasonable condition but your fuse board is outdated, a consumer unit upgrade costs £350 to £600 including fitting and testing. This is a common upgrade that brings older installations up to current safety standards without a full rewire.
